WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

INDIGO GIRLS MOVIE

The Indigo Girls are one of those hugely significant bands that mean so much to so many, yet, fly under the radar of most rock press, almost invariably because they’re women, and maybe because they make folk rock. They also happen to be gay, and the male gaze doesn’t stretch that far, clearly.

The group itself has been a lasting success, but also, between Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, there’s a non-profit record label, restaurants, books, political movements, charitable causes, environmental activism and it’s little wonder that, in queer circles, they are rightly regarded to be absolute legends.

In ‘about fuckin’ time‘ news, there’s a feature length documentary about them, called ‘Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All’, a line taken from their famous ‘Closer To Fine’ song. It actually premiered at the ’23 Sundance, but now, it’s heading out to (presumably US) theatre, but for the rest of the world, streaming and DVDs sales await, and maybe showings at your fave indie cinema.

You know how to look for these things. You need to be somewhat self sufficient. We do know that May 7th is digital time.

Director Alexandria Bombach has said: “Festival audiences have embraced and celebrated this story of Amy and Emily, and now we get to bring this film to fans in theatres all over the country. A film about community should be seen in community.”

“From our earliest days at Little Five Points Community Pub in Atlanta, the ideal of ‘community’ has informed our music and activism,” Ray said. “We feel blessed to have worked with such a compelling crew of folks, who created a document that reflects the vital part our audience, activists, friends, family, and mentors play in our ongoing creative lives.”

In her statement, Saliers said: “It is a beautiful documentary that captures the life force of our community. Now our community has an opportunity to see it on the big screen — we are thankful for that.”
