WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

AMBIENT LENNON IS SURPRISINGLY GREAT

Today is John Lennon’s birthday – he would have been 84 – and to celebrate this, we’ve been treated to something rather surprising. While a lot of repackaged music from musicians can feel a little exploitative at times, churning out old stuff without much new going on, that’s not the case with this latest Lennon related release.

Effectively, what we’ve got is a meditation tool or ambient reimagining of Lennon’s works, and it’s a novel twist on breathing life into songs we know so well. It also makes a lot of sense, what with The Beatles and Lennon being practitioners of meditation themselves.

All the songs are reworkings of Lennon’s ’73 song ‘Mind Games’, and each of them see the song bent completely out of shape into some genuinely cool, airy, meditative pieces.

It’s available as a physical release, as well as streaming, obviously. The streaming version is available now and the physical release is available on Friday October 11th. Sean Lennon has been involved with some of the remixes and the vinyl version will come on a very handsome looking crystal clear wax, cut on 180 gram goodness. It’ll be triple gatefold too, and we gather it is a limited release so these will fly off the shelves.

In addition to this, on the record version, Side B will include 1.8 second mantras which play continuously on a locked groove. They’ve really poured a lot of love into this project and we’ve not really seen the likes of it before from the Beatle-related camp.
