WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

THE RETURN OF TUNNG

Once upon a time, music retreated away from the bombast of Britpop and US rap-rock, and all over the place, more introspective bedroom producers were making tricky electronic music and singer-songwriters gravitated toward the acid-folk of the ’70s, focusing more on cottage industries and community.

Tunng managed to straddle both worlds, with critics dubbing their music ‘folktronica’, which mildly belies the charm of the band, but handy shorthand for anyone looking for rootsy music mixed with crunchy electronics. The good news is that they’re back!

January 2025 is the twentieth anniversary of ‘This is Tunng… Mother’s Daughter and Other Songs’ and now they’ve got a new LP to share called ‘Love You All Over Again’, which has all the classic Tunng hallmarks that have made them such a magnetic prospect for fans. In fact, this latest cut is a return to what they started doing, which is a salve for the imminent year end.

Mike Lindsay says: “I went back to the first two albums just to listen to how we fused genres – things like Davy Graham, Pentangle, the Expanding Records catalogue and the Wicker Man soundtrack. Over the years, Tunng’s sound has varied and twisted, but at the root there is always a flavour of what Sam and I made on that first album. Rather than searching for a new avenue we went back to what we used to do, which, after all this time, felt like it was a new avenue… Love You All Over Again is our way of coming full circle.”

You’ll want to hear a song won’t you? Handily, you can now listen to the lead single from the newest project – ‘Didn’t Know Why’. The album is released January 24th 2025 and you can get your pre-saves and pre-orders in now, here – fulltimehobby.ffm.to/whyisthecolourofthesky

Now, tune in for the latest track.
