Ibiza has gone through a number of changes over the years – it went from some counterculture acid house haunt, to being a key destination for package holidays and stag-do’s, and yet, all the while, it maintained some mystical feeling away from the English pubs and nightclubs of San Antonio.
The north of the island is still a bit crunchy and cosmic, which feels right given the first flush of visitors to the island (in pop culture terms) were the hippies and acid drop-outs in the ’60s and ’70s.
Well, focusing on the latter, there’s a beautiful book called ‘Ibiza 1976’ which documents the work of photojournalist Walter Rudolph. He travelled the world working with travel companies, looking at emerging holiday destinations through the ’60s and ’70s, shooting everything on lovely Kodak film, and capturing the vibe of places perfectly.
Now, the Agony + Ecstasy Gallery gives Rudolph centre stage with this fine new book, looking at his work in the Med. It’s an enduring set of images and has loads of ace fashion and an easy-going feel about it, long before the chips and egg crowd moved in.
