REVIEW / KARRAHBOOO / NOT DA 2

Like reviewing techno, sometimes it is hard to pinpoint why one record is good and another one is bad – it’s all basically one long vibe check, and that’s the thing we’re thinking about when listening to ‘Not Da 2’ by Karrahbooo.

See, this album is a whole lot of fun to listen to – the whole thing has that crispy edge to it, almost like it’s a download from DatPiff years ago – it’s kinda badly produced, but in a good way, rather than being completely amateurish. Rather, there’s an air of nonchalance and breezy swagger that permeates the whole thing, which makes for a super enjoyable listen.

Sure, there’s a lot of the tried and tested tropes of rap and pop in there, like people blowing up your phone, cockiness, trying to get off with people, people just being jealous, and all that, but sometimes you don’t want anyone rewriting the rulebook.

There’s enough light-and-shade in each track, as you swerve from more R&B-esque numbers, to digital piano bops, to bedroom trap-shit, to keep you listening.

See, she’s had a bunch of hot guest appearances, but for those taking note, we were ready for a length long-player. Maybe this could’ve been a bigger statement piece, maybe it could have showed more visible ambition? Doesn’t really matter though when the whole thing just feels like a barrowful of fun that maybe you don’t need to overthink.

Like, there’s a lot of one-dimensional hip hop out there that tries desperately to convince you that there’s something much deeper at play, and that the metaphors may not be fully realised for years to come… and while it sometimes rings true, it is mostly bullshit. You get the impression Karrahbooo isn’t bother with these kind of proclamations. Just play the damn record already while she gets some stuff off her chest.

The bass is heavy, the synths work overtime, the hi-hats go crazy – if you’re looking for a listenable new artist from Atlanta, then you should absolutely give this a whirl.
