WHAT’S GOOD THIS RECORD STORE DAY BLACK FRIDAY THEN?

RSD Black Friday is a side mission equivalent to the normal Record Store Day, and it takes place on Friday November 27th. Before you start whining about it, it gets people into record shops and that’s broadly a good thing, okay?

If you’re not keen on it, that’s okay too. You’re allowed to be a little grump about it, because what’s a record shop culture without someone pooh-poohing popular things?

Anyway, the full list for this event has been released and honestly, we were tempted to just cut and paste the whole thing and let you read it. That feels lazy even for us, so we decided to cherry pick what is worth further investigation, based purely on our own tastes rather than something silly like re-sale value. If you want the official list in full, click here.

Here we go then!

13th Floor Elevators – ‘The Mono Singles’

Celebrating 60 years of the psych overlords, here they are in glorious mono. The artwork is predictably lovely as well. All their singles released between May 1966 and January 1969 are included. Nice.

Affinity with Linda Hoyle – ‘Affinity with Linda Hoyle’

A collection of rare tracks, rehearsals and whatnot from the UK prog-jazz group, featuring the vocals of Linda Hoyle. If you want a taster of what that might sound like, here’s a video.

Allen Toussaint – ‘Artist / Producer / Songwriter’

Allen Toussaint’s contribution to music is huge, and bringing with him that unique sauce that you only get from being New Orleans royalty. This record is well worth investigating while it is on the record shop shelves.

Donald Austin – Crazy Legs

Oft sampled ’73 Detroit funk classic produced and arranged by the legendary Dennis Coffey. This is a cult fave amongst the heads, and the chance to get it on vinyl should not be passed up.

Cal Tjader Quintet, The – ‘Plays Afro Cuban’

Translucent yellow version of the influential Latin Jazz LP from 1954. Hear jazz and vibes crash head first into trad Afro-Cuban rhythms and percussion and feel the impact it had on the records that followed it from the likes of Mongo Santamaría, Willie Bobo, and the Fania label.

Cecil Payne – ‘Zodiac’

Jazz collectors are pretty well served on RSD, and this one looks cool! This record (and Charles Brackeen’s ‘Rhythm X’) come as part of a limited edition Strata-East Dolphy Series postcard set. They feature audio cut directly from the original analog tapes, are remastered by Kevin Gray and are pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl. Lovely!

Elmiene – ‘Heat The Streets Some Mo”

The UK’s finest soul singer currently, this EP is available on vinyl for the first time and even features a spot from Ghostface Killah!

The Feminine Complex – ‘Livin’ Love’

This has been a release for RSD before, so if you missed out, here’s your second chance. ’66 Nashville bubblegum psychedelia from five talented girls who taught themselves how to play. This is an excellent record, and if you get the chance to grab it, do it with both hands.

Harold McNair – ‘The Fence’

A sax player from Jamaican backed by the rhythm section of Pentangle – that’s worth your entrance fee alone, right? 1970’s ‘The Fence’ combined British blues with funky jazz, and was way ahead of its time. Get to know this, and if you see it, take a punt.

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts – ‘I Love ‘N Roll: The Shadow Album’

I Love Rock ‘N Roll: The Shadow Album had been lost for decades and recently got unearthed, which is very exciting! Alternate versions of Jett’s classic songs, this is a great thing to scoop up if you see it on the shelves. And who doesn’t love a lost LP?

KATSEYE – ‘The Dance Breaks’

Do any of your kids like KATSEYE? Don’t be tight and buy them this. Also, KATSEYE seem like they hate each other, which is always fun.

Lafayette Afro-Rock Band – ‘Darkest Light / Hihache’

Two absolute funk classics from the brilliant Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, on a nice 45! Definitely worth putting in the box!

Luiz Bonfá – ‘Non-Stop To Brazil’

A really lovely looking limited run, hand-numbered, LP from Brazilian legend Luiz Bonfá, who of course is one of architects of the bossa nova sound. It’s the first time this has been on vinyl, and it’s 180g too.

The Monkees ‘The Monkees Sessions’

A cute looking release celebrating the Monkees’ 60th anniversary with a bunch of alternate takes, remixes and obscure tracks from their first album sessions. It is on coloured vinyl too. Maybe one for the completists.

Playboi Carti – ‘MUSIC – SORRY 4 DA WAIT’

Playboi Carti on vinyl. If you like him, you need this, obviously.

Robert Hunter – ‘Alligator Moon’

DEADHEADS – GET ON THIS. Previously unreleased studio album from Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Originally recorded in 1976 with the band Comfort and scheduled for release in 1978, but it got shelved… until now that is! Lovely artwork too.

The Music Machine – ‘The Sound of Gloves’

Another lost album, this time from garage punk legends The Music Machine! This is based on the band’s ’67 demo album of the same name. Rare mixes, alternate takes, and previously unissued recordings, this looks like the absolute business for any garage fiends.

Various Artists – ‘Jazz Dispensary: Cosmic Nuggets’

A little boxset of 45s that comes with some glow in the dark 45 adapters, which is cute as all hell. Includes cuts from Idris Muhammad, Patrice Rushen and more.

Ween – ‘Shinola, Vol. 2’

Ween are basically The Beatles for people who smoke a lot of weed, and that’s no dig at them. This LP is the second volume in the Shinola series from Ween, which is a fun collection of previously unreleased outtakes, fan faves and B-sides. It’s on brown vinyl too, because of course it is.
