Heard of The Shaggs? If you have, you just got excited because there’s no band quite like them. Are they Outsider Music? Is it the purest form of Pop music? Whatever it is, whoever pressed play on a Shaggs song can categorise their life as a ‘before’ and ‘after’ moment.
And now, there’s a film about the girls, called ‘WE ARE THE SHAGGS’. Directed by Ken Kwapis, we get to hear the unique and extraordinary story of one of the most unusual bands to ever do it. Their 1969 album ‘Philosophy of the World’ went under the radar and slowly grew into the stuff of legend.
The songs have been mocked and dismissed – being written and performed on untuned guitars, with wavering rhythms and simple lyrics that have the vaguest grasp of harmony, but there’s always been something utterly charming about them that’s hard to beat.
The idiots at Rolling Stone said they performed like “lobotomised Trapp Family Singers”, while NRBQ’s Terry Adams said they reminded him of the free jazz of Ornette Coleman.
They had other friends in high places too, with Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain championing the LP, and subsequently, many others too. Now, through archive footage, interviews, and the people who were there at the time, ‘We Are The Shaggs’ explores the music, the girls involved, and the legacy of one of the strangest records ever made.
There’s more info to be had over at wearetheshaggs.com and of course, we have a trailer which you can watch right now.
Wonderful, and richly deserved.
