WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

  • HABIBI FUNK’S FIRST SIGNING: CHARIF MERGARBANE

Charif Megarbane is Habibi Funk’s first contemporary signing, which is a thrill! There’ll be a new LP (which sounds ace) called ‘Marzipan’ released on 11th August 2023. You’ll know Habibi Funk’s incredible output with an insanely high hit-rate of compilations of Middle Eastern and North African music – seriously, there’s no duffers in the catalogue,

  • WHEN DID DEVENDRA BANHART CHANGE?

This is totally on us really, but we assumed Devendra Banhart was still making acid-folk, but we’re basing that on information in our head that is well over a decade old. Anyway, if you’re not surprised, we were taken aback by his new single which is all synthy and fully produced (by Cate Le Bon,

  • ALLAH-LAS GO MILDLY OFF-PISTE

Do you like the Allah-Las? Great news for you is that they’ve announced a new album called ‘Zuma 85’ and there’s a tour afoot and two new songs for you to listen to. The first new song we’ll share is called ‘The Stuff’ which will be a familiar sound to fans, with twangy psych guitars

  • NEW BEATLE MUSIC – THAT’S BIG NEWS

The big news is that we’re going to have some new music from The Beatles this year. Will it be great and better than anything they’ve done before? Probably not, but this is still exciting stuff for Fab Four Dorks around the world. We’re excited. Paul McCartney says he’s used artificial intelligence to help create

  • I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE + MUSIC

We were going to write a piece about the music in the brilliant and often bizarre world of I Think You Should Leave. If you’ve not seen it, then half the memes on the internet probably don’t make a lick of sense to you. Go and watch it. Anyway, we said we were going to

  • BARBIE MUSIC: A MOVIE THAT WILL BE FUN OR TRYING TOO HARD TO MEME?

Hype can be a terrible thing, leaving us plebs feeling like a moment has shot it’s load before you’ve even got a chance to digest the damned thing. In a period where everything has felt frantic, fraught, and fucking shite, we could all do with a dose of something camp and ridiculous to cheer us

  • TONY MCPHEE, GROUNDHOGS, RIP

British Blues legend, prog overlord and axe-master, Tony McPhee from The Groundhogs, has sadly passed away. • DOES KELIS LOVE BILL MURRAY?

Not a thing we thought we’d be writing in a headline, but here we are. Fact is, the pair have been spotted out together a bunch, and obviously, men and women couldn’t possibly be platonic friends without bumping uglies in the mind of everyone, so what’s the craic? After posting some photos on Instagram featuring

  • STOREFRONT CHURCH – GREAT BAROQUE POP

We didn’t know anything about Storefront Church, but we recognise a cool band name when we see one. It’s the moniker of Lukas Frank who is on tour with Laetitia Sadier who you’ll know from Stereolab. There’s a new song out we really like called ‘The High Room’, which is a gem of a baroque…

  • MANCHESTER LAGOS AND ME

Music documentaries don’t always have to be about hugely famous people – in fact, a number of the best ones are those that teach you something new. With that, there’s a new flick coming out which looks great called ‘See My World: Manchester, Lagos & Me’ which is a short film looking at the “cultural…

  • JUSTICE VS MIGUEL

Justice have a new single out and it’s called ‘Saturnine’ and features R&B singer Miguel. We’re desperately trying to avoid comparing Justice to Daft Punk and this song to their work with Pharrell, but we just typed that sentiment out, so maybe we’re failing not only ourselves, but the work of Justice too. Anyway, seeing…

  • REVIEW / LOGIC1000 / MOTHER

We can all fall foul of listening to something talking about their mental health issues and meanly talking about self indulgence, as some enormo star talks about how lonely they’ve felt in their condo, but sincerely, there was a moment in Logic1000’s timeline where it looked like we were going to watch her vanish completely…
